St Mary’s Church, Fratton Road on Saturday 29 March at 7.30 p.m.
Portsmouth Choral Union’s Spring concerts are always eagerly anticipated by audiences and especially so this year when they will be giving the first Portsmouth performance of Will Todd’s ‘Passion Music’. This jazz-infused work is scored for a solo vocalist (singing in a characteristic jazz-soul idiom) piano, bass, drum kit, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, timpani and percussion. This work in nine sections highlights different points in the passion story. The music is by turns exciting, expressive, energetic and reflective – as dictated by the story being told.
Alongside Will Todd’s Passion Music, the choir will perform John Rutter’s ever popular ‘Feel the Spirit’ – a collection of Spiritual arrangements, including Joshua fit the battle of Jerico, Deep River and Every time I feel the Spirit. In both of these works Portsmouth Choral Union will be directed by David Gostick.
Tickets in advance: Adults £18, Children/ students: £2.50.
Portsmouth Choral Union is also hosting a workshop day on the Passion Music on Saturday 1st March in the David Russell Theatre, Portsmouth Grammar School and is going to be directed by Will Todd himself – this event is open to all singers, the £25 fee includes music hire. Further details of this, and the concert can be found on the choir’s website: https://pcuchoir.org.
