Festival of Early Music at Portsmouth Cathedral: Baroque Alchemy

Sunday 8th March @ 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm

Baroque Alchemy is the realisation of a long-held dream of recorder virtuoso Piers Adams. Since the 1980s, he has envisioned combining the expressive beauty of the recorder and the drama of Baroque music with the expansive sound-world of modern synthesiser technology.

Following a 25-year international career as front-man of the acoustic Baroque super-group Red Priest, Piers now presents this stunning project with his keyboardist partner Lyndy Mayle. Together, they transform the traditional early music recital into a 21st-century experience, replacing the familiar continuo of the harpsichord with the limitless possibilities of modern synthesis. The natural warmth of the recorder balances the electronic textures, creating a captivating fusion of ancient and modern sounds.

Baroque Alchemy introduces new audiences to early music while taking classical enthusiasts on a fresh and exciting journey. With just two musicians – armed with a keyboard, a quiver of recorders, a MacBook, and a state-of-the-art Bose PA – this self-contained performance suits intimate chambers as well as larger festival stages.

At the heart of the project is a deep love of the music, a profound understanding of Baroque performance practice, and an adventurous spirit that engages audiences and makes the music accessible and thrilling for all.

Tickets from £10.00-£25.00.
