Portsmouth Sing 100 Gala Concert

Saturday 9th May @ 7:30 pm - 10:00 pm

This will include performances of significant pieces celebrating the city, presented by the Portsmouth Philharmonic Orchestra, Solent Symphony Orchestra, Portsmouth Cathedral Choir, Portsmouth Choral Union, Portsmouth Baroque Choir and HM Royal Marines Band, as part of the Portsmouth100 commemorative year. It will include works by Swain, Copland, Ravenscroft, Parry, MacDowell, Walton, Saint-Saëns and Rutter, as well as a new commission by Paul Saggers.

The programme will include:

National Anthem arr. Elgar or Freda Swain (she was born in Portsmouth)
Copland – Fanfare for the Common Man
Saint-Saëns – Symphony No. 3 (2nd mvt)
Swain – Breathe on me breath of God
MacDowall – Ave Maris Stella
Saggers- Portsmouth 100 Commission*
Swain – Fanfare for a Queen
Parry – Blest Pair of Sirens
Walton – Portsmouth Point
Rutter – Gloria
Parry – Jerusalem

* This will be an 8 minute piece with a secular text from Simon Armitage, the Poet Laureate, who has Portsmouth connections.

This is part of the Portsmouth Sing 100 Festival taking place at Portsmouth Guildhall and Guildhall Square,
St Thomas Cathedral and St John’s Cathedral, which celebrates classical and light music in Portsmouth. It will include a lecture-recital at the University; an organ recital; a Menuhin Room recital; performances by the University Concert Band and Orchestra, the University Choir, the Milton Glee Choir, Spinnaker Chorus, Solent City Chorus, the RMSM Parade Band and the Military Wives Band.
