SUMMARY:Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra: Classic FM Hall of Fame - The greatest works in classical music
DESCRIPTION:With the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra.Enjoy an evening featuring six of the greatest works in classical music!Rossini’s bright and sunny overture preludes one of the most famous and popular of all concertos\, suffused with the sun-drenched melodies and balmy atmosphere of southern Spain; its achingly beautiful slow movement is perhaps the most sublime pieces of music ever written. The Spanish passion continues with Chabrier’s dazzling rhapsody and Rimsky-Korsakov’s vibrant and colourful suite. In contrast\, Borodin’s tone poem evokes the sweeping plains of central Asia\, whilst nightmarish visions abound in Mussorgsky’s dark and brooding depiction of a Witches Sabbath.Rossini – The Barber of Seville OvertureRodrigo – Concierto de AranjuezChabrier – EspañaMussorgsky – A Night on the Bare MountainBorodin – In the Steppes of Central AsiaRimsky-Korsakov – Capriccio Espagnol \n\n\n\nTickets £15 – £31.You can also book tickets directly through the venue\, who have a different allocation of tickets\, by clicking here. SUMMARY:The Solent Symphony Orchestra - Bach & Beyond
DESCRIPTION:With the Solent Symphony Orchestra.Part of the Festival of Early Music at Portsmouth Cathedral.Early music with a modern twist\, this programme includes music by JS Bach\, known as the “Father of the Baroque era” re-arranged by Gustav Holst and Purcell’s stirring rondeau from Adbelazar\, reworked into the magnificent ‘Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra’ by Benjamin Britten. \n\n\n\nThe evening will also feature local rising star\, Harry Dixon who will perform Rachmaminoff’s romantic 2nd Piano Concerto. Whilst not an obvious link to early music\, Rachmaminoff himself acknowledged the influence of JS Bach\, considering him “an inexhaustible source of musical knowledge and fundamental to his own musical education and development”. Harry has the opportunity to perform as the winner of the Portsmouth Performing Arts Concerto Award 2025. \n\n\n\nAn evening of glorious music in spectacular surroundings\, this will appeal to all music lovers and an opportunity to introduce youngsters to the exciting sound of a full Symphony Orchestra. \n\n\n\nMacCunn – OvertureThe Land of the Mountain and the Flood \n\n\n\nRachmaninov – Piano Concerto No. 2Soloist – Harry DixonWinner of the 2025 Portsmouth Festival of Performing Arts Concerto Prize \n\n\n\nTchaikovsky -Symphony 5Visit the SSO website. \n\n\n\nTickets available from the Cathedral website and at the door.

SUMMARY:Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra: Mahler’s Fifth
DESCRIPTION:With the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra.Haydn composed his second Cello Concerto in 1783 for Antonín Kraft\, a cellist in the Esterházy court orchestra. It was for many years thought to be the work of Kraft (who presumably offered help in the writing of the solo part) before the rediscovery in 1954 of the autograph manuscript\, which had lain unnoticed in a Vienna archive for over 40 years\, cleared up the question of the work’s authenticity once and for all. The journey from death to life lies at the heart of Mahler’s Fifth Symphony\, extremes of joy and pain contrastingly expressed more fully than ever before. Psychologically speaking\, it proceeds from tragedy to triumph. Mahler paints a huge canvas of cosmic emotion\, using enormous brushstrokes of sound for the largest possible gestures. From the opening funeral march the music gradually lightens\, progressing through a gigantic waltz fantasy and intensely lyrical adagietto before reaching the exuberant rondo-finale. The effect is electrifying. \n\n\n\nHaydn – Cello Concerto in DMahler – Symphony No.5 \n\n\n\nTickets £15 – £31.You can also book tickets directly through the venue\, who have a different allocation of tickets\, by clicking here. SUMMARY:Havant Symphony Orchestra: The Art of Rebellion
DESCRIPTION:By Havant Symphony Orchestra.Conductor: Ben QureshiStep into a world of bold imagination and defiant creativity with The Art of Rebellion\, a programme that celebrates composers who reshaped the musical landscape. Debussy’s dreamlike Prélude à l’après-midi d’un faune broke with tradition to usher in a new era of colour and atmosphere\, while Stravinsky’s dazzling ballet score The Firebird ignited the 20th century with its fiery rhythms and folkloric magic. \n\n\n\nAt the heart of the evening lies Shostakovich’s powerful Violin Concerto No. 1\, performed by soloist Ed Daniel. Dark\, intense\, and unflinching\, it stands as a profound act of resistance and artistic truth in the face of oppression. Together\, these works reveal music’s power not only to enchant\, but to challenge\, provoke and transform. \n\n\n\nDebussy – Prélude à l’Apres Midi d’un FauneStravinsky – The FirebirdShostakovich – Violin Concerto (Soloist: Ed Daniel)Tickets £5-£50.
