SUMMARY:Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra: Classic FM Hall of Fame - The greatest works in classical music
DESCRIPTION:With the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra.Enjoy an evening featuring six of the greatest works in classical music!Rossini’s bright and sunny overture preludes one of the most famous and popular of all concertos\, suffused with the sun-drenched melodies and balmy atmosphere of southern Spain; its achingly beautiful slow movement is perhaps the most sublime pieces of music ever written. The Spanish passion continues with Chabrier’s dazzling rhapsody and Rimsky-Korsakov’s vibrant and colourful suite. In contrast\, Borodin’s tone poem evokes the sweeping plains of central Asia\, whilst nightmarish visions abound in Mussorgsky’s dark and brooding depiction of a Witches Sabbath.Rossini – The Barber of Seville OvertureRodrigo – Concierto de AranjuezChabrier – EspañaMussorgsky – A Night on the Bare MountainBorodin – In the Steppes of Central AsiaRimsky-Korsakov – Capriccio Espagnol \n\n\n\nTickets £15 – £31.You can also book tickets directly through the venue\, who have a different allocation of tickets\, by clicking here. SUMMARY:The Solent Symphony Orchestra - Bach & Beyond
DESCRIPTION:With the Solent Symphony Orchestra.Part of the Festival of Early Music at Portsmouth Cathedral.Early music with a modern twist\, this programme includes music by JS Bach\, known as the “Father of the Baroque era” re-arranged by Gustav Holst and Purcell’s stirring rondeau from Adbelazar\, reworked into the magnificent ‘Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra’ by Benjamin Britten. \n\n\n\nThe evening will also feature local rising star\, Harry Dixon who will perform Rachmaminoff’s romantic 2nd Piano Concerto. SUMMARY:Portsmouth Choral Union: Music for Eastertime
DESCRIPTION:Read preview notes. With the PCU and Southern Pro Musica. Conductor: David GostickAccompanist: Sue Graham SmithSchofield – Stabat MaterMcDowell – Ave maris stellaMozart – Regina coeli \n\n\n\nTickets: £20/£3 from the PCU website.Ian Schofield (currently living in Portsmouth) composed the Stabat Mater between 2013 and 2014. It is scored for choir\, soprano solo and string orchestra and was first performed in 2015 by Guildford Choral Society and conducted by Jonathan Willcocks. \n\n\n\nStabat Mater refers to a famous 13th-century Christian hymn that describes the Virgin Mary’s deep sorrow as she stood at the foot of Jesus Christ’s crucifixion\, a devotional theme inspiring many musical compositions and artworks. \n\n\n\nCecilia McDowell has been described by the International Record Review as having a ‘communicative gift that is very rare in modern music. An award-winning composer\, McDowall is often inspired by extra-musical influences\, and her choral writing combines rhythmic vitality with expressive lyricism. \n\n\n\nAve Maris Stella was commissioned by Portsmouth Grammar School for the Portsmouth Grammar School Chamber Choir and was first performed by them in Portsmouth Cathedral on 11th November 2001.The text has a special significance for Portsmouth with its great naval heritage; the central section “they that go down to the sea in ships” being particularly poignant. McDowall\, was horrified by the events of 11th September 2001\, and with Ave Maris Stella successfully composed a simple peace anthem which cannot fail to touch the hearts of all those who experience it.  \n\n\n\nMozart Regina Coeli\, or “Rejoice\, Queen of Heaven\,” is a bright\, joyful work\, which honours the Virgin Mary\, and is used in the Roman Catholic liturgy during the Easter season. Mozart composed three settings of this text—this work is the last of the three. The exact date that the piece was written is unknown\, but scholars believe it was completed in 1779.

SUMMARY:Festival of Early Music at Portsmouth Cathedral: Baroque Alchemy
DESCRIPTION:Baroque Alchemy is the realisation of a long-held dream of recorder virtuoso Piers Adams. Since the 1980s\, he has envisioned combining the expressive beauty of the recorder and the drama of Baroque music with the expansive sound-world of modern synthesiser technology. \n\n\n\nFollowing a 25-year international career as front-man of the acoustic Baroque super-group Red Priest\, Piers now presents this stunning project with his keyboardist partner Lyndy Mayle. Together\, they transform the traditional early music recital into a 21st-century experience\, replacing the familiar continuo of the harpsichord with the limitless possibilities of modern synthesis. The natural warmth of the recorder balances the electronic textures\, creating a captivating fusion of ancient and modern sounds. \n\n\n\nBaroque Alchemy introduces new audiences to early music while taking classical enthusiasts on a fresh and exciting journey. With just two musicians – armed with a keyboard\, a quiver of recorders\, a MacBook\, and a state-of-the-art Bose PA – this self-contained performance suits intimate chambers as well as larger festival stages. \n\n\n\nAt the heart of the project is a deep love of the music\, a profound understanding of Baroque performance practice\, and an adventurous spirit that engages audiences and makes the music accessible and thrilling for all. \n\n\n\nTickets from £10.00-£25.00.By Portsmouth Cathedral music events.Read about other events in the festival. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra: Mahler’s Fifth
DESCRIPTION:With the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra.Haydn composed his second Cello Concerto in 1783 for Antonín Kraft\, a cellist in the Esterházy court orchestra. It was for many years thought to be the work of Kraft (who presumably offered help in the writing of the solo part) before the rediscovery in 1954 of the autograph manuscript\, which had lain unnoticed in a Vienna archive for over 40 years\, cleared up the question of the work’s authenticity once and for all. The journey from death to life lies at the heart of Mahler’s Fifth Symphony\, extremes of joy and pain contrastingly expressed more fully than ever before. Psychologically speaking\, it proceeds from tragedy to triumph. Mahler paints a huge canvas of cosmic emotion\, using enormous brushstrokes of sound for the largest possible gestures. From the opening funeral march the music gradually lightens\, progressing through a gigantic waltz fantasy and intensely lyrical adagietto before reaching the exuberant rondo-finale. The effect is electrifying. \n\n\n\nHaydn – Cello Concerto in DMahler – Symphony No.5 \n\n\n\nTickets £15 – £31.You can also book tickets directly through the venue\, who have a different allocation of tickets\, by clicking here. (Different booking fees will apply.)
