SUMMARY:Chichester Festival Theatre events: Gianni Schicchi (or Where There’s A Will)
DESCRIPTION:OperaUpClose returns to the Minerva with a brilliantly subversive and satirical take on Puccini’s enduringly popular family farce. A modern twist on a classic set to delight both opera lovers and curious newcomers alike.  \n\n\n\nDirected by award winning PJ Harris\, rising stars Dan D’Souza and Ceferina Penny lead a stellar cast of opera singers and players in a new English version by Hannah Kumari\, re-orchestrated by Vahan Salorian.  \n\n\n\nPuccini’s comic masterpiece comes roaring into the 21st century\, in a modern day ‘whodunnit’ challenging a world where everyone is out for themselves.  \n\n\n\nEvery performance will feature creative captioning as part of the production design. \n\n\n\nIn the Minerva Theatre.Wednesday 7:15pmThursday 2.15pmThursday 7:15pmPresented by Chichester Festival Theatre. \n\n\n\nTickets from the CFT.

SUMMARY:Festival of Early Music at Portsmouth Cathedral: Handel's 'Messiah' by the Portsmouth Cathedral Choirs
DESCRIPTION:Experience Handel’s spectacular and moving choral masterpiece\, performed by the Portsmouth Cathedral Choirs and directed by Dr David Price. This special concert\, set within the intimate surroundings of Portsmouth Cathedral\, features an authentic performance with The Capelle Baroque Orchestra on period instruments\, offering rich depth and resonance true to the time in which Messiah was composed. \n\n\n\nA highlight of the Cathedral’s concert calendar\, the oratorio tells the story of the birth\, ministry\, death\, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. First performed in Dublin in 1742\, it was an immediate triumph for Handel\, already renowned for his oratorios. Remarkably composed in just 24 days\, Messiah remains one of the most beloved and powerful choral works nearly three centuries later. \n\n\n\nJoin Portsmouth Cathedral for this celebrated performance and experience the enduring grandeur\, emotional intensity\, and sublime beauty that have made Messiah a timeless masterpiece. \n\n\n\nTickets.By Portsmouth Cathedral music events.Read about other events in the festival. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra: Mahler’s Fifth
DESCRIPTION:With the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra.Haydn composed his second Cello Concerto in 1783 for Antonín Kraft\, a cellist in the Esterházy court orchestra. It was for many years thought to be the work of Kraft (who presumably offered help in the writing of the solo part) before the rediscovery in 1954 of the autograph manuscript\, which had lain unnoticed in a Vienna archive for over 40 years\, cleared up the question of the work’s authenticity once and for all. The journey from death to life lies at the heart of Mahler’s Fifth Symphony\, extremes of joy and pain contrastingly expressed more fully than ever before. Psychologically speaking\, it proceeds from tragedy to triumph. Mahler paints a huge canvas of cosmic emotion\, using enormous brushstrokes of sound for the largest possible gestures. From the opening funeral march the music gradually lightens\, progressing through a gigantic waltz fantasy and intensely lyrical adagietto before reaching the exuberant rondo-finale. The effect is electrifying. \n\n\n\nHaydn – Cello Concerto in DMahler – Symphony No.5 \n\n\n\nTickets £15 – £31.You can also book tickets directly through the venue\, who have a different allocation of tickets\, by clicking here. Ensemble 360 celebrates its 20th birthday with a gift to us – boundary-breaking new music created collaboratively. Jasdeep Singh Degun is no stranger to forming alliances in the music world. He was composer and co-music director for Opera North’s 2022 award-winning production of Orpheus\, weaving a tapestry from the European and Indian traditions. ‘It’s really not a matter of different worlds meeting’\, he reflects. ‘It’s just me: as much as I’m immersed in Indian classical music\, I’m a product of this country; I’m a British composer.’ Both innovator and custodian of tradition\, composer and performer\, with a debut album made with the legendary Nitin Sawnhey released on Peter Gabriel’s Real World Records\, he is reshaping the musical landscape.Presented by The Classical Series at Portsmouth Guildhall. \n\n\n\nVisit The Guildhall website for further details and tickets. \n\n\n\nImage (c) Adam Lyons
