SUMMARY:St Faith's Church Havant music events: John Bryden (piano) and Michael Kevin Jones (cello) in concert
DESCRIPTION:Please see the poster below. Presented by St Faith’s Church Havant music events.A fabulous evening of piano and cello duets by two consummate performers\, at the top of their game.Doors open at 6.30pm. Tickets £10. Includes refreshments. There are 50 ‘early-bird’ tickets available\, up until 11 April\, for £9 each.  Here’s the programme: \n\n\n\nMartin Berteau  1691/1771Sonata op n.3 in G major AllegroGraveAllegroThis sonata in G major is one of the most popular Baroque works for cello and piano. It  was thought to be the work of Giovanni Battista Sammartini (c.1698-1775) for many years \, however scholars now attribute this piece to the French cellist and composer Martin Berteau (1709-71)\, one of the founders of the French cello tradition.  It was originally written for cello and bass continuo\, this version for cello and piano has been arranged by Leonard Rose . \n\n\n\nBeethoven 1770/1827Sonata op. 5 no 1 in F majorAdagio sostenuto AllegroRondo Allegro VivaceWritten in 1796 while in Berlin for the great cellist Duport the sonata is dedicated to the King of Prussia Friedrich Wilhelm II\, himself a keen cellist.  It was premiered in court by Beethoven and Duport’s brother Jean-Louis. \n\n\n\nCesar Franck 1822/1890Sonata in A majorThis sonata was written in 1886 for Ysaye and is considered one of the finest sonatas for violin and piano ever written. The setting for cello and piano was the only alternative version sanctioned by Franck. This was created by the renowned cellist Jules Delsart. After thorough historical study based on reliable documents\, Delsart’s transcription for cello where the piano part remains the same as in the violin sonata was published by G. Henle Verlag as an Urtext edition. Based on oral history by Pablo Casals and a letter written by Antoine Ysaye\, Eugène Ysaÿe’s son\,it has often been speculated that the work was first conceived as a sonata for cello and piano\, and only later reset for violin and piano when the commission from Eugène Ysaÿe arrived. \n\n\n\nMICHAEL KEVIN JONES – cello \n\n\n\nThe English cellist\, Michael Kevin Jones\, was born in Watford and studied Music Performance Piano/Cello at the Royal College of Music in London. While a student there he was chosen to play for the Royal family and awarded a German government scholarship for further study in Köln. He continued his studies at the Robert Schumann Hochschule Düsseldorf with Johnannes Goritzki His teachers included Pauline Ballard\, Dulce Haigh Marshall\, Michael Evans and Joan Dickson. \n\n\n\nMichael has found a unique place for himself among today’s performers. After his studies he quickly became solo cellist and toured the world with top musical groups. He has developed a non conventional career incorporating multi-musical activities and is also an avid teacher and coach. \n\n\n\nAs member of ‘the Jones Maruri cello guitar duo\, Michael had his first top 10 selling CD ‘Original music for cello and guitar’ in Hong Kong and China and as a soloist his recording of the complete J.S. Bach’ Cello Suites (BWV 1007) on a 1667 Stradivarius cello for the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York has received international critical acclaim and several audio awards. \n\n\n\nHe has recently started performing with John Bryden with whom he studied piano at Dartington College of Arts and they have just released their first album ‘ cello meditation’ together. Concerts tours in 2025 included Canada\, USA\, England\, Scotland\, Spain and South Africa. \n\n\n\nJOHN BRYDEN – piano \n\n\n\nJohn Bryden was born in Edinburgh and studied in Emmanuel College\, Cambridge. He studied with Peter Katin in London and in Master Classes in Siena and in Bonn with Guido Agosti and Claudio Arrau. He also benefitted greatly from the advice of Clifford Curzon and Hans Keller. \n\n\n\nJohn’s concert career has taken him from California to Kathmandu via Wigmore Hall and round the world on the M.S. Saga Rose and the M.S. Saga Pearl. For ACE Cultural Tours he has led over 150 tours within Europe \, playing in houses or museums associated with Handel\, Haydn\, Beethoven\, Mendelssohn\, Smetana\, Chopin\, Liszt\, Schumann\, Dvorak\, Grieg and Elgar. \n\n\n\nAs a double bass player in the National Youth Orchestra he played in the Colston Hall ( after a memorable Reception by The Lord Mayor ) and as pianist of the Dartington Trio in a series of lunchtime concerts in St George’s \, Brandon Hill. \n\n\n\nAt Dartington International Summer School he played for Master Classes given by Jacqueline du Pre and was the piano teacher to Michael Kevin Jones with whom he has now started playing concerts. All proceeds will go to the St Faith’s “Big Build” campaign.
